The Peaceful Road Less Traveled
Georgia cabin rentals are popular getaways for leaving worry and stress behind. Go outside. Smell the fresh air. Listen to the leaves moving in the breeze, the stream murmuring, the birds calling. This is north Georgia. In these ancient mountains you can relax into your stride, away from the stresses and struggles of daily life.
Less Traveled Hikes and a Great Drive
With four state parks within 30 minutes of Helen plus the Chattahoochee National Forest, there are miles to stretch into where few others roam. Here are some shorter hikes that are usually not as crowded. All state parks charge $5 for a day pass.
Bottoms Loop Trail at Unicoi State Park
A 2-mile adventure through woodlands and streams. Get more information at the Visitor Center at the lodge and ask for a trail map, as some turns may not be clearly marked.
Laurel Ridge Trail at Smithgall Woods
This 1.6-mile loop trail is beside the Visitor Center near the park entrance. There is a bit of a climb, but the view of Mt. Yonah is your reward. The park is gated, so plan your hike during hours of operation. Visit the Smithgall Woods State Park website for current hours.
Hemlock Falls Trail at Moccasin Creek State Park
A short 1.5-mile round-trip hike that follows Moccasin Creek to Hemlock Falls. No hills, but give special attention to footing on rocks. Visit the Moccasin Creek State Park website for more information.
Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway
For a day trip, this 3-hour drive passes through gorgeous mountain scenery with plenty of stops for hikes, picnics, and photos. See details at the Federal Highway Administration's byways page.
Stay at the Cabin
Or maybe you just want to hang out at the cabin. Some of our cabins have game tables or game rooms. Check out our Down-Time at the Cabin post for ideas.
More Secluded Cabins to Consider
Some guests enjoy the buzz of Helen, and we do have properties in town. But if you want to really get away, consider Chattahoochee Shoals (amazing Chattahoochee River views, about 20 minutes from Helen), Chimney Mountain Chalet (fenced backyard, garden tub with jets, minutes from Unicoi State Park), Bogg's Mountain Lodge (surrounded by rhododendrons and mountain laurel, 10 minutes from Clayton, GA), Knotty Pine (hot tub, wooded views, ping-pong), or Purpleaire (hot tub, garden jacuzzi tub, game room, spectacular sunsets near Smithgall Woods State Park).
Whatever time of year, the mountains have a way of helping us unwind. Enjoy north Georgia and give us a call to help plan your next stay.
